Specific Learning Outcomes

By the end of this unit, students will be able to:

Understand that data can be shown in different ways

Create a timeline showing the demise of the Moriori population on Rekohu

Using ICT students will gain an understanding of the events that caused the Demise of Te Iwi Moriori

Use statistics research to highlight the resurgence in Moriori culture

Teaching and Learning Activities
Prior Knowledge

Discuss with class: What is a timeline?

        What could a timeline be used to show?

        Model creating a timeline using classroom routine 

        Provide students with a copy of daily eating timetable, See sheet 1A

Discuss with class:   We are going to create a timeline about the Moriori, but first we need to find out what we already know about them.

      What is a Moriori?

      Where do Moriori live?

      How many people are Moriori?

      How could we find out more about Moriori? What sources could we use.

(Te Ara, Wikipedia, Encyclopaedia, Ask Jeeves, Google, Books)

New Learning

Students working in pairs, find out as much information as they can in 10 minutes about Moriori, taking care to record numbers and dates. Report back to class. Discuss and compare what we now know about them. Have we found out any statistics about Moriori?

Assessment Activity

Using the information from the class and the resources provided, (sheet 1B) create a timeline of Moriori population statistics

Present a detailed timeline showing what each population drop indicates or has been caused by

(Extension) Locate and select current statistics electoral role information and insert into the timeline.
