o  Nature of Science

Understanding about science

o Students will appreciate that science is a way of explaining the world and that science knowledge changes over time.

o They will identify ways in which scientists work together and provide evidence to support their ideas.

Investigating in science

o Students will build on prior experiences, working together to share and examine their own and others’ knowledge.

o They will ask questions, find evidence, and carry out appropriate investigations to develop simple explanations.

Communicating in science

o Students will begin to use a range of scientific symbols, conventions, and vocabulary.

o They will engage with a range of text types and begin to question the purposes for which these texts are constructed.

Participating and contributing

o Students will use their growing science knowledge when considering issues of concern to them.

o They will explore various aspects of the issue as they make decisions about possible actions.

o  Living World

Life processes

o Recognise that there are life processes common to all living things and that these occur in different ways.

Ecology

o Explain how living things are suited to their particular habitat and how they respond to environmental changes.

Evolution

o Begin to group plants, animals, and other living things into science based classifications.

o Explore how the groups of living things we have in the world have changed over long periods of time. Some living things in New Zealand are quite different from living things in other areas of the world.

o  Planet earth and Beyond

Earth cycles

o Investigate the cause, rate, and signs of change of natural features.

Astronomical cycles

o Make observations of the Moon, the Sun, and visible planets, starting to develop a sense of the vastness of the solar system.

Interacting cycles

o Identify the conditions that allow life to exist on Earth at this moment in time.

o Physical World

Physical enquiry

o Use some scientific ideas to explain physical phenomena, such as movement, forces, electricity and magnetism, light, waves, sound, and heat.

o Consider, describe, and represent patterns and trends in physical phenomena and use simple scientific models.

o Material World

Properties of materials

o Group materials in different ways, based on their physical and chemical properties. Relate properties to the material’s use. Distinguish between pure substances and mixtures.

Chemical reactions

o Identify the different ways in which materials can undergo permanent or temporary changes and relate these changes to everyday situations.

Particles

o Begin to develop an understanding of the interaction of particles in phase changes and chemical reactions.
