English is the official language of 53 countries. English is the third largest language by number of native speakers, after Mandarin and Spanish. Estimates of English speaking people (that include second language speakers) vary greatly, from 470 million to more than 1 billion people. That is a lot of people to meet and speak to. English is spoken as a first language by around 400 million people around the world.
